It’s Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2015 and this year’s bigger than ever because it’s the 15th anniversary! So it’s no co-incidence that Day 1 should open with Manish Malhotra’s socially conscious “Blue Runway” range; his summer collection where Manish proved his mettle as both designer and humanitarian yet again.
In association with the WEvolve campaign, the show marked the global launch of this initiative which challenges and encourages all people, but especially the young, to question the gender inequalities and societal norms that can lead to gender violence. Manish recruited all the usual Bollywood Star clout to the cause as well as Sin City Actress Rosario Dawson (centre). Bollywood's favourite designer was also joined by desi beauties Deepika Padukone, Kajol, Huma Qureshi, Sophie Choudry, Jacqueline Fernandez and Sridevi.
For a collection that was making such a an important statement, Manish personally chose a new off-site venue, for the first time in his association with LFW and gave his attention to every detail to ensure that all the elements came together in a spectacular show that did justice to this special occasion. He chose for this the old world ambiance of the Great Eastern Home – a massive, sprawling home décor store featuring unique and worldly furniture.
Albeit in a more contemporary setting, Manish’s range still celebrated his couture legacy with the Blue Runway collection capturing romance and lightness through spotlighting intricate thread work, mirroring the Parsi gara and welding these on soft and flowing fabrics. He used signature colours like the peaches, creams and blues that he’s famous for but stretched each colour palette so that the blues were everything from powder to midnight blue.
Whilst his yellows reflected rays of positivity, thus reflecting the cause that they were throwing a spotlight on.
Each and every garment was complimented with stunning metallic embroidery or mirror work adding contrasting texture and depth, with this off-shoulder gold number being a particular favourite of ours:
Being a brand that brings luxury to beautiful women all over the world, we particularly love Manish’s work because whilst being inspired by traditional techniques, this collection is innovatively designed to be worn in any part of the world. The women’s line includes summer flowy gowns, jacket-sarees, off shoulder and halter crop tops and skirts as an ode to the lehenga, with embroidery giving a 3D effect to light fabrics. Since this show is about empowering women by empowering men, Manish Malhotra has given a strong focus to his men’s collection too with impeccably tailored menswear that includes bandh-gala jackets and long shirts in structured and easy styles. In essence, Manish Malhotra brings together a youthful and glamorous collection to celebrate the younger generation as the key agents of change.
